The washed SL coffees are part of Kamavindi’s Retro 84 project. The project aims to create special lots with a focus on traditional varieties and double fermentation. Through the project, Kamavindi works with farmers to bring back the traditional Kenyan profile.
The process starts with the selective picking of ripe red cherries from selected farms that grow only SL varieties. The farmers deliver the cherries to Kamoko Coffee Factory, a wet mill operated by Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society, where they are hand-sorted to remove underripe and overripe cherries.
The coffee is pulped on the same day it is harvested, then dry-fermented for around 20 hours. After this first fermentation, clean water is added to the tank to wash off the excess mucilage. The coffee is then left in the water for a second fermentation of 20 to 24 hours, after which it is washed, graded, and placed on raised beds for final drying.
