Lamastus Family Estates
Lamastus Family Estates is a fourth-generation Panamanian coffee family whose history in Boquete spans more than a century. It began in 1918, when Robert Louis Lamastus founded Elida Estate on the slopes of the Barú Volcano. Amado Boutet established the family’s roots in Boquete in 1925, and in 2014, Luito Lamastus planted a new generation of Gesha.
Today, the Lamastus family farms five estates: Elida, El Burro, Luito Gesha, Cliff Gesha and Trompo Gesha, across four distinct microclimates in the Boquete highlands, at elevations reaching up to 2,200 meters above sea level.
Each estate possesses its own microclimate, microorganisms and terroir. Together, they form five distinct Gesha estates, each shaped by its own remarkable biodiversity and environment.
Elida Estate - Est. 1918
Approximately half of Elida Estate lies within Volcán Barú National Park, a protected ecological reserve home to an extraordinary diversity of plants, birds, butterflies and mammals.
The estate extends from approximately 1,670 to 2,200 meters above sea level, reaching some of the highest elevations at which coffee is cultivated in Panama. Here, Gesha grows in an exceptional combination of high altitude, rich volcanic soils, cool temperatures, fog and mist, native microorganisms and coffee yeasts, surrounded by virgin cloud forest.
At the highest sections of the estate, nighttime temperatures can fall below 10°C. These cool conditions slow the maturation of the coffee cherries and extend the period between flowering and harvest.
This prolonged ripening gives the fruit more time to develop sugars and aromatic compounds, contributing to the delicacy, complexity and distinctive aromatic expression for which Gesha from Elida Estate has become known.
Alongside this unique terroir, the Lamastus family places considerable emphasis on processing innovation and precise drying techniques, drawing on four generations of experience and more than a century of coffee production.
A Remarkable 2026 Harvest
The 2026 season added another chapter to Elida Estate’s competition record.
At the 2026 Best of Panama, Elida Gesha Washed Torre placed 1st in the Gesha Washed category, while Elida Gesha Natural Vuelta placed 3rd in the Gesha Natural category.
That same season, Coffee Review awarded an Elida Gesha 98 points, a score Elida had previously become the first coffee in Coffee Review’s history to achieve.
In September 2026, Lamastus Family Estates’ First Light private auction reached US$591,007 across 26 lots, with its highest-priced lot selling for US$14,710 per kilogram.
The lots we selected come from the same trees, the same terroirs and the same hands behind these remarkable records.
Process
Fully ripe burgundy cherries are pulped on the evening of harvest before the seeds are fermented in cool highland water. Once fermentation is complete, the coffee is thoroughly washed and transferred to the drying facility.
The coffee is then finished using Lamastus’ CRD (Cold Room Dried) method, where it dries slowly at a controlled low temperature. This extended drying curve helps preserve the most delicate and volatile aromatic compounds while maintaining exceptional clarity and precision.
At Falda’s 1,850 meters elevation, nights can approach 10°C, slowing the ripening of the cherries and extending their maturation. Combined with cold-room drying, these conditions preserve the high-altitude character of the lot, resulting in a washed Gesha with remarkable aromatic definition, structured acidity and a clean, long finish.
