Hacienda Barbara is run by the Rogers Family and guided by agronomist Hunter Tedman, a respected figure in Panama’s specialty coffee community. Their focus is on responsible farming, long-term soil health, and high-quality processing. Over many years, their coffees have consistently performed well at the Best of Panama, reflecting the strength and stability of their work.
Among their three farms, we selected La Huaca. La Huaca means “treasure”. The farm sits at around 1600 m on the slopes of Piedra de Candela, where most of the land is planted with Catuai and the higher sections are reserved for small lots of Gesha. Around 70 hectares of the farm are preserved as protected forest, supporting biodiversity and contributing to the overall health of the land. Half of the estate is wild forest, while the other half is carefully managed throughout the year, from cultivation to post-harvest work.
Beyond his role at Hacienda Barbara, Hunter also runs his own regenerative agriculture project, Black Moon Farm. The farm earned the 1st Place auction lot in the 2024 Best of Panama Varietals category, after taking 2nd place in 2023!
La Huaca has also been recognized in previous years, earning a Second Place lot from Piedra de Candela and a 5th Place washed Gesha from Jaramillo. These earlier results show the farm’s steady, long-term commitment to producing high-quality coffee without compromise!
