This coffee perfectly embodies the washed Ethiopian style we love. Fresh and vibrant, it offers a well-defined flavor profile that showcases its unique terroir, with pronounced floral notes complemented by juicy peach and bright bergamot.
The origins of coffee in Guji date back centuries, with wild varieties naturally growing in the region’s forests. Local communities, mainly from the Oromo ethnic group, used coffee in traditional practices long before its commercial development.
For many years, Guji was included under the Sidama appellation. To better distinguish the quality of coffees produced here, Ethiopian authorities separated Guji in the 2000s. This new designation improves traceability and more accurately reflects the distinctive taste and characteristics of Guji coffees.
Today, Guji produces some of the world’s finest coffees. Grown on hilly plateaus within dense or semi forest environments, the diverse endemic species provide optimal shade and enrich the soil’s fertility.
Shonora Coffee, the producer, was founded in 2018 and is named after their father, Shonora Gata. The family’s coffee legacy began in 1988, when Shonora Gata started trading gold alongside coffee. In 1992, he obtained a government license and began selling coffee at the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange. In 1996, he established a dry coffee processing station in Gerba, followed by a wet processing station in Shakicha Kebele in 1997. After 22 years of dedication, he passed the business to his children in 2002.
The youngest generation, Adugna and Morkata Shonora, both engineering graduates, founded Shonora Trading PLC Shonora Coffee. With over 40 years of experience, the family works closely with more than 150 smallholder farmers in Guji. Their coffee is grown organically on nutrient rich soils, using composted leaves from shade trees, without chemical fertilizers.
