Altieri coffees' texture always surprises us. There’s an incredible creamy tactile feel. The cup opens with sweet notes that remind us of caramelized pineapple, beautiful jammy mouthfeel yet still very elegant thanks to its persistent floral backbone. As it cools, it’s as if a second profile appears. Violet and grape bring structure to the cup, and the finish carries notes of white flowers. Elegant, gourmand, with a perfectly mastered fermentation.
Altieri is a family-led coffee project rooted in the Boquete region of Panama. It began over 20 years ago with Eugene “Don Gene” Altieri, a New Yorker who saw in the volcanic slopes of Chiriquí the potential for something long-term, meaningful, and grounded in quality.
Today, the farms are managed by his children, Anna Lynn and Francisco, alongside Roger Pitti, the trusted farm manager. The Altieri family cultivates Caturra, Catuai, Typica and Gesha across two farms: Alto lino and Callejón Seco.
All Gesha is grown at Callejón Seco, from seeds originally sourced from the Peterson family of Hacienda La Esmeralda. The farm is divided into small plots, or tablons, each named after Eugene’s grandchildren. The oldest Gesha trees were planted on the Dilgo tablon in 2007.
Altieri is a farm that has evolved with time, from conventional beginnings to a focused, quality-driven approach. Alongside improvements in processing and cultivation, equal attention has been given to working conditions and the people behind the coffee.
This dedication shows in the cup, and has earned the farm repeated recognition at the BOP.
